Con pupazzo meccanico, Dickens intende sicuramente un automa.

Gli automi sono macchine che funzionano da sole. Automata è il titolo di un libro scritto da Erone di Alessandria, poi tradotto nel Cinquecento. Questo genere di macchine troverà la massima espressione nel Cinquecento con Vaucanson.

Intorno all'automatica si sviluppa tutto un pensiero filosofico che vuole ridurre ad un meccanicismo totale la stessa vita. La prima espressione filosofica del l'automazione si vede in Julien Offray de La Mettrie che scrive l' Homme Machine. 

L'automatica diventerà poi una vera scienza con Wiener, che durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, si occupa di sistemi e scriverà un libro intitolato Cibernetics.

The automatons are machines that work by themselves. Automata is the title of a book written by Heron of Alexandria, later translated in the Sixteenth century. This kind of machine will find its highest expression in the Sixteenth century with Vaucanson. 

The automatic spread around a philosophy that wants to reduce total life itself to a mechanism. The first philosophical expression of automation is seen in Julien Offray de La Mettrie who wrote the 'Homme Machine. 

The automatic will then become a true science with Wiener, who during the Second World War, deals with systems and wrote a book entitled Cybernetics.
