Il più antico cannone venne progettato da Ctesibio di Alessandria, nel III secolo a.C.

Nel corso dei secolo venne ripreso e migliorato, tra gli altri, da Giovanni Cavalli, il quale perfezionò la rigatura. Quest'ultima impartisce al proiettile uno spin che ne migliora la stabilità, quindi la precisione della mira.
Il cannone però è troppo grande per poter sfruttare la tecnica di rigatura tipica dei fucili, quindi Cavalli applica due alette sulla palla di cannone per fa sì che si inserirscano in rispettive guide della canna  e che imprimano alla palla una rotazione.

Il cannone modificò la fisionomia delle città medievali, portando alla realizzazione di mura più basse e robuste, i bastioni.

The oldest gun was designed by Ctesibius of Alexandria in the third century BC. 

Across the centuries it was improved, among the others, by Giovanni Cavalli, who perfected the rifling. This imparts a spin to the projectile which improves the stability, then the accuracy of the aiming. 

The gun, however, is too large to exploit the technique of grooves typical of the rifles, then Cavalli applies two fins on the cannonball so that it can insert in respective guides of the rod and that imprint a rotation to the ball. 

The cannon changed the physiognomy of the medieval city, leading to the creation of robust and lower walls, the ramparts.
