Il declino finanziario che colpisce Betsey Trotwood (zia di David) e quindi indirettamente anche David, lo porta alla ricerca di una nuova attività remunerativa, necessaria per mantenere se stesso e la povera zia, ormai privata di tutti i suoi risparmi.
La sua scelta si rivolge alla trascrizione dei discorsi parlamentari, attività che necessita l'apprendimento della tecnica della stenografia.
La stenografia è un metodo di scrittura veloce tachigrafico, che impiega segni, abbreviazioni o simboli per rappresentare lettere, suoni, parole o frasi. Nacque allo scopo di poter scrivere alla velocità con la quale si parla per fisssare immediatamente su carta tutte le informazioni ascoltate.
Ad oggi la stenografia è stata in parte soppiantata dalla stenopatia, che si basa su concetti analoghi, ma fa uso di macchine apposite, il cui primo esempio in Italia avrebbe dovuto essere il potenografo, o Clavicembalo scivano, un progetto di Celestino Gallo, che però non fu realizzato a livello industriale.
Il potenografo aprirà le porte allo sviluppo di questo tipo di macchine, fino ad arrivare alla macchina da scrivere.

The potenografo will open the door to the development of this type of machines, up to the typewriter.
