Maglio/Trip hammer

Il piccolo Davy in questa frase fa riferimento al maglio, un dispositivo meccanico per lavorazioni di fucinatura o stampaggio che deforma plasticamente un pezzo sotto l'azione di una pressione. Nel 1839, James Nasmyth riuscì ad applicare al maglio la forza data dal motore a vapore, così che fu possibile sfruttarlo al meglio nel processo industriale.

Il maglio, nel contesto della storia della tecnologia, non rappresenta altro che l'ultima "fase evolutiva" del martello, così come riporta George Basalla nel suo libro Evoluzione della Tecnologia.

On page 130 there is a reference to the trip hammer,a mechanical device for forging or stamping a piece by plastically deforming it under the action of a pressure.

In 1839, James Nasmyth was able to apply to the trip hammer the power given by the steam engine, so that it could be better use in the industrial process.

The trip hammer, in the context of the history of technology, represents nothing more than the latest "evolutionary phase" of the hammer, as well as George Basalla reports in his book Evolution of Technology.
