Navi/Ships

Pag 409

Riferimenti all'industria navale compaiono spesso nel libro.

References to the shipping industry often appear in the book.
This is because the great strategic importance of the port of London meant that, during the industrial revolution, all over the UK were widely shipbuilding industries. The whole country was involved and engaged in the construction of the Royal Navy and the British merchant marine, the first in the world as efficiency and cutting edge technology.
The largest shipyards were in Clydeside, in Birkenhead, Barrow-in-Furness and Belfast.
In this period the naval supremacy of Britain was rarely tested. When the sail was replaced by the steam, the early industrial development of Britain reinforce this dominance.
Warships were sent everywhere, Algiers (1816), Zanzibar (1893), in support of its diplomacy, but no one dared to challenge the great combat ships in the forefront.

Carrozza/Carriage

"Mi fa piacere ricordare che quando il carro giunse davanti al cancello [...]" pag.35;

"Dovevo tornare a casa la sera seguente: e non con il postale, ma con la pesante carrozza notturna, chiamata "Il fattore", e usata per brevi tratte [...]" pag. 157;

"Si trattava, ricordo, di qualcosa a metà tra il calesse e il carro per il trasporto dei pianoforti; era tutta dipinta di un color cupo e tirata da un cavallo nero con una lunga coda." pag. 161;

The carriage and then the horse were the primary means for moving goods and people, until the end of XIX century.
In ancient times, the horse was mostly used to drag chariot, but not heavy one, because it wasn't yet known the technology  to control his movements. The invention of the bite overcome this problem. The invention of stirrups and bridle then allow a better use of horses in war,increasing the rider's balance on the horse and allowing him to fight with greater ease.

Inside the book there are a lot of references about the carriage which make clear how essential  was this mode of transport for the English society of the nineteenth century.
