Acciaio è il nome dato ad una lega composta principalmete da ferro e carbonio, quest'ultimo in percentuale non superiore al 2,065: oltre tale limite, le proprietà del materiale cambiano e la lega ssume la denominazione di ghisa.

Le proprietà dei vari tipi di acciaio dipendono principalmente dalla quantità di carbonio presente e dalla sua distribuzione nel ferro, dalle ferroleghe aggiunte e dai trattamenti termici subiti. Generalmente presentano buone proprietà meccaniche e sono lavorabili per deformazioni plastiche e con le macchine utensili; sono facilmente saldabili.

Steel is the name given to an alloy principally composed of iron and carbon, with carbon at a rate not greater than 2,065: beyond this limit, the properties of the material change and the alloy is called cast iron. 

The properties of various types of steel depend primarily on the amount of carbon present and its distribution in the iron, on the additions of ferro-alloys and on the heat treatments suffered. Generally it has good mechanical properties and is processed for plastic deformation and with machine tools; it is easily weldable.
