Seta/Silk

La seta è una fibra proteica di un animale con la quale si possono ottenere tessuti tendenzialmente pregiati. La seta utilizzata per realizzare tessuti si ottiene dal bozzolo prodotto da bachi da seta, nella maggior parte appartenenti alla specie Bombyx mori.

La lavorazione della seta si conosceva in Cina già nel 3000 a.C. Le vesti di seta che erano riservate agli imperatori cinesi entrarono a far parte del guardaroba della classe sociale più ricca, diventando un bene di lusso ambìto che si estese fino alle aree raggiunte dai mercanti cinesi per le qualità di leggerezza e bellezza. 

La crescente domanda per i prodotti in seta ha reso questa fibra una delle merci più importanti per il commercio internazionale fino a raggiungere l'industrializzazione della sua produzione.

Tra la fine del 700 e l’inizio dell’800 nasce la figura del semaio, colui che va in Oriente a trafugare i nuovi semi (uova dei bruchi) così che possano produrre in Italia una seta migliore: c’erano stati infatti numerosi casi di malattie ed epidemie che colpivano i bruchi nella loro capacità di produrre seta di alta qualità.

Silk is a fiber protein of an animal with which one can get fine fabrics tend. The silk used to make tissue is obtained from cocoons produced by silkworms, in most of the species Bombyx mori.

The manufacture of silk was known in China as early as 3000 BC. The silken robes that were reserved for Chinese emperors became part of the wardrobe of social class richer, becoming a luxury item coveted that extended to the areas reached by the Chinese merchants for the qualities of lightness and beauty. 

The growing demand for the products in silk fiber made this one of the most important commodities for international trade to achieve the industrialization of its production.

In late 700 and early 800 was born the figure of the seed hunter, the one who goes East to steal the new seeds (eggs, caterpillars) so that they can produce in Italy a better silk: there were in fact numerous cases diseases and epidemics that struck the caterpillars in their ability to produce high quality silk.
