Giogo/Yoke

_______

The yoke is a device intended for animal traction (especially beef). In ancient times it was applied to the horns of the animal and then to the shoulders, because people understand that in this way it was more efficient.
By extension, the term is also traditionally used to refer to the operating unit, usually a pair of oxen.

Ruota/Wheel; Gru/Crane; Scafandro/Diving suit

_______

In this few lines, there is a description of the negative consequences of the Industrial Revolution.
The amazing amount of products that the industry is now able to generate, using also the first machines, often ends up producing a surplus, unsold items, accumulated in real landfills that are located in the suburbs of large cities.
The same fate is up to the damaged or malfunctioning objects, the consumerist mentality is boring, that one that, after years, we still have today.

For further information on the objects written in the quote: wheels, crane,  diving suits.

Pupazzo meccanico/Mechanical doll

_______

With mechanical doll, Dickens intends definitely an automaton.
The automatons are machines that work by themselves. Automata is the title of a book written by Heron of Alexandria, later translated in the Sixteenth century. This kind of machine will find its highest expression in the Sixteenth century with Vaucanson.
The automatic spread around a philosophy that wants to reduce total life itself to a mechanism. The first philosophical expression of automation is seen in Julien Offray de La Mettrie who wrote the 'Homme Machine.
The automatic will then become a true science with Wiener, who during the Second World War, deals with systems and wrote a book entitled Cybernetics.

Telegrafo/Telegraph

_______

The telegraph is a communication system designed for remote transmission of data (letters, numbers and punctuation marks) making use of certain codes.

The first telegraph,  the optical telegraph was invented by Claude Chappe in 1793 and consisted of a rotating arm with two other arms of a smaller size. The position of these arms corresponded to a letter of a special alphabet.
This system gives way to the birth of the modern science of communication. The optical telegraph, it creates a line of transmissions, which, however, was not possible on ships, where this communication system was in use, but according to the master-slave system (unique communication).

The Chappe telegraph will then be replaced by the electric telegraph (Morse), from which it will then develop  the telephony (Meucci). The electric telegraph will eventually be supplanted by the wireless transmission, the radio.

Caldaia/Boiler

_______

The boiler, in a heating system, is the equipment that realizes the transfer of heat to a fluid, avoiding to boil it , in order to distribute this heat to an environment.
Initially, the fuel used was wood, then replaced by coal and finally replaced by liquid fuels.

Telai meccanici/Mechanical looms

_______

The loom is an instrument for textile production, which function by interweaving a series of wires, perpendicular to each other, called warp and weft.
In 1787, the steam engine is applied to the loom, and thus comes the mechanical loom.
In 1790, Joseph-Marie Jacquard, French, invented the Jacquard loom, in which a punch card controls the movement of the needles, allowing the implementation of very complex designs (with this Jacquard lays the groundwork for the first computer programming).

Mulino/Mill

_______

The mill is a machine that uses an external force (water, wind or electric energy) to produce mechanical work. Historically mills were exploited for grinding grain or  producing flour.
